GONUBIE NATURE RESERVE

(GONUBIE MUNICIPALITY)

This small 8ha-reserve lies at the mouth of the Gonubie (Gqunube) River, approximately 19km north-east of the windy city of East London. Originally proclaimed for the protection of waterfowl, the reserve today boasts more than 130 bird species - including crowned cranes which return each summer to breed and raise their chicks. The two small vleis in the reserve are separated from the sea by coastal bush and a low sand ridge. Gonubie is a birdwatcher's and wildlife photographer's paradise, offering facilities such as observation platforms and hides overlooking these vleis. A visit to the information centre at the entrance to the reserve is a must, as a bird checklist and information on the indigenous flora of the area may be obtained here.

Unfortunately the reserve does not offer any accommodation, but the small coastal town of Gonubie has hotels and caravan and camping sites. Gonubie Nature Reserve is open to tourists throughout the year. Opening time: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (7h00 to 16h30); Sundays (10h30 to 16h30). If arranged with the municipal office, visits can be made at other times.

How to get there:
From East London, follow the N2 northwards towards Umtata, then follow signposts into Gonubie. Just before the municipal offices, turn right into Seventh Street and follow it to the reserve parking area.
